HAHAHA AUSTRALIA WHAT ARE YOU DOING. WHY ARE YOU SO AGAINST THE INTERNET?

"The new law, which came into force on January 6, requires internet bloggers, and anyone making a comment on next month's state election, to publish their real name and postcode when commenting on the poll."

"It also appears to apply to election comment made on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter."

"The law, which was pushed through last year as part of a raft of amendments to the Electoral Act and supported by the Liberal Party, also requires media organisations to keep a person's real name and full address on file for six months, and they face fines of $5000 if they do not hand over this information to the Electoral Commissioner."

Welcome to Red Australia/Nazi Australia.

I guess I should be fair and post something else too. How about that Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement? It's still in the works but there have been some leaked bits. This agreement will cover the following countries; the USA, Switzerland Japan, Australia, Canada, the European Union, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore and United Arab Emirates.

"The leaked document includes a provision to force Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provide information about suspected copyright infringers without a warrant, something which many feel should not be legal, making it easier for the record industry to sue music file sharers and for officials to shut down non-commercial BitTorrent websites such as The Pirate Bay."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement

For your information, in the United States of America, unless the police have a warrant, they cannot get your information from your ISP. This is why most anti-piracy cases flounder because it's fucking impossible to get enough proof of piracy to get a warrant.

God. My Australian friend is so mad about that. Wtf is that shit.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe some people have the nerve to call that free speech knowing that some people can take your name and address and harass you for voicing an opinion they dislike online.

[identity profile] aguniator.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
... wtf how did I not hear about this /is australian. Guess it's time to go play my toned-down violent video games and await the upcoming glorious internet filter that blocks off everything interesting!

Fucking country.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
If you did not hear about this, you may want to watch out for a new international law that's in the works for the internet....

[identity profile] gonsai.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
... Well then. That's... special.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
If that last one passes as is, we'll have to enjoy going back to the old days where you have to watch all your anime in dub or hope their subbed or learn Japanese and import the DVDs.

[identity profile] gonsai.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yanno, I can't see this being TOO terrible. But it we might also go back to the quality dubs had back in those days too.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I like anime that generally isn't popular/never coming out in the US. Plus, there would be no way to preview an anime to tell if it's good or not (unless you rent...which is hard enough to find). Every 30 bucks you blow on 4-5 episodes could turn out to be a flop in your own opinion. Also, most Americans would have to fork out $50-100+ for a visual novel to be imported or 20+ bucks for each Touhou game (enjoy finding those in stock when they're first released). I, for one, see it as a nasty thing.

[identity profile] gonsai.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, mostly. I really just want the US anime industry to continue improving quality and the popularity of anime piracy tends to force them to do so. Taking away the competition will just mean we're back to shit like MD GEIST.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think I am the only person in the world that liked MD Geist.

[identity profile] gonsai.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
You are. And you should be ashamed of yourself.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I refuse to be ashamed.

[identity profile] w4rp3d.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
No, actually, you're not. I've never seen all of either MD Geist movie, but I liked what I did see.

[identity profile] mendaa.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Or use a site like Crunchyroll.

[identity profile] moulin.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's Zura. Every facial expression he could possibly have is already golden.

[identity profile] moulin.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW, MAN. I felt incredibly trolled when I found out then realized I canceled so many of my sponsoreds to get real paid accounts.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS IS WHAT I GET FOR PLAYING AT ISLAND, WHERE 30+ ICONS SHOULD BE AN APPING REQUIREMENT.

[identity profile] moulin.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
WE'RE JUST CRAZY AND LIKE OUR ICONS

Just wait until February/March when all of the Christmas paid time runs out for us. Gonna be heartbreaking.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe if I have a tiny bit of extra money, I'll throw some support out there.

[identity profile] moulin.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] oftendistracted.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
ACTA'll do very little. Encrypt bittorrent client of choice, don't download masses and masses of mp3s or films that came out RIGHT THIS MINUTE, done. They're only really going to bother using that against truly major downloaders because otherwise it's going to be hassle and hassle and hassle.

(Certainly they're not going to chase anyone for japanese anime, on the basis that the only people bleating about copyright infringement are usually looking for TV or music. I'll bet there's very few RIAA wonks keeping an eye on tokyotosho, for instance.)

Even then, some countries aren't really paying attention to ACTA. Even with the craziness going on in England the government have been quick to point out - and amend into the Digital Bill - that they're going to have a three strikes before any hint of prosecution and that disconnection is only going to occur in the largest and most consistent cases. The cynical viewer may think they shouldn't even have the option, but that we'll just have to live with. Either way, they certainly can't catch the entire sea of bittorrenting with a net this flimsy.

[identity profile] oftendistracted.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention that Britain already tried it here and had every single ISP turn around and go 'so who's going to pay for this? We sure as hell aren't, piss off.' It might get used against big sites - see the OiNK case in England - but even then the Oink guy eventually got off scot-free and there've been calls to revive the site.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I just can never know about the RIAA. They've stooped pretty low before and the penalties some people have suffered here are outrageous. There's no doubt that they've been doing things borderline illegal and while everyone can't get caught in the net, you never know if it's going to be you or not.

[personal profile] vocaloidiot 2010-02-02 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no doubt. But by encrypting your torrent programs and by not going near, uh, 'high-risk' targets like Avatar 2 weeks after release or the latest album from 99 Cents or whoever the hell else you're largely safe from any real repercussions even with ACTA fully humming into life in the background. It's a matter of reward vs. risk not just for torrenters but also for the RIAA themselves, as they've had enough costly court cases where they've lost that they can only really feasibly go after large targets.

... hi I'm too lazy to log out, WITNESS MY SHAME

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always heard that encrypting torrents was still particularly worthless.

That is, unless you know a program name you could forward in my direction.
vocaloidiot: (Cherry Garcia)

[personal profile] vocaloidiot 2010-02-02 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
utorrent's got a decent encryption toggle in prefs -> bittorrent. I've heard that you should typically pair it with a decent copy of PeerBlock, but I've been too lazy to take that step as the only thing I tend to get is anime and then open-source or unlicensed-in-the-UK songs, which they would have a terribly hard time pinning on me in any kind of court.

[identity profile] sevetenks.livejournal.com 2010-02-02 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
... That is just. Fucking stupid. Way to be, Australia. D8

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
They are rather fond of them, yes.

I heard about Australia being censorship happy, but... haha wow, this shit? I can't properly comment on the ridiculousness of it all.

[identity profile] precto.livejournal.com 2010-02-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
There would be like...a revolution here in America if they tried to do that.
